A Bright Side on Personal Injury in Sacramento, CA

In our Personal Injury Law Firm in Sacramento, I often find myself inundated with stories of accidents, injustices, and pain. The bright side of this work comes however, when our injured clients are able to move on with their lives into the direction of new dreams, hopes and futures.

As I was reading through the web today, I came across an article that reflected this feeling and I have decided to step aside from the car accidents and brain injuries for a moment to share with you a woman who has overcome her own personal injury.

The woman's name is Michelle Shackelford and she is from our own Sacramento area. Michelle had a career as a CHP motorcycle officer for many years, following a dream she always had held growing up. One day, however, her life as she had known it suddenly changed. The news article explained that while attending a police duty on the offramp of Madison Avenue, Michelle was hit by a reckless driver. Michelle wound up critically injured after being launched from her motorcycle and then, subsequently, hit by her own rolling bike.

Like many of our clients, Michelle had a long road ahead of her of rehabilitation and recovery. And, as if often happens, Michelle's career was cut short and was placed in a position to find a new direction for her life.

The article described Michelle's new life, now new owner of a gym in Sacramento called Fitness Together. She loves her new career and path. Michelle now uses her accident as a way to help others, taking her experiences from her many days in rehab and physical therapy to assist and advise her gym members.

I love this story because it explains a real-life account of someone conquering a seemingly devastating injury. Please know that there is always hope and life even in the gravest of circumstances.

Dog bites on the rise in Sacramento, California

It is amazing to see how many people are victims of dog bites nowadays. This threat is especially high throughout California and even more specifically, in the Sacramento area.

Reading through the internet, I was shocked to see how many people have suffered from dog bites and dog attacks in just the past week. Even more interesting was the statistic I found on the California State Assembly Democratic Caucus website. Research now shows that "California suffers the nation’s highest occurrences of dog bites, animal attacks and attack-related fatalities in the nation and children are the most common victims".

Not only that, but Sacramento is one of the highest ranking cities for dog bites. A study done by the United States Postal Service shows Sacramento as coming in third place for the largest amount of postal workers bitten or attacked by dogs (I always knew that had to happen a lot...). Only Long Beach and Houston rank higher than Sacramento.

So what is a person to do? First of all, if you are a dog owner, it is advised to spray or neuter your dog. Unaltered animals are three times as likely to attack humans or other animals. Secondly, if you are attacked by a dog, seek medical help and notify the authorities to prevent an attack from happening again. Finally, with serious injuries, seek legal advice and assistance.

Please do not hesitate to call us at the Law Offices of Moseley Collins if you have been suffered injuries in a dog attack or bite, we are here to help.

Until next time...

Hospital Mistakes Causing Serious Injuries Near Sacramento, CA

I read an article today about a woman not far from our Sacramento home in Modesto, CA who underwent a triple bypass surgery. Not to make the paining surgery any easier, upon waking, the woman discovered a serious accident; the surgeon had conducted the operation using a different patient's angiogram films!

Startling, shocking and unusual? Startling and shocking, yes, especially to the nature of the surgery. But unusual may not be the appropriate word to use. Hospital mistakes in Sacramento and California are actually more common than you think. As the article states:

"The Institute for Healthcare Improvement, which has done leading research on medical mistakes, estimates up to 98,000 people a year die from medical errors that occur in hospitals, more than the annual deaths from auto accidents, breast cancer or AIDS. Many more patients are harmed."

These numbers are staggering and frightening to see.

So what happened to the Modesto woman? After being reassured she would be fine, the mistaken patient began to have symptoms of heart disease. After seeking the advice of another doctor, a second heart surgery was in order. As expected, the woman sought legal help for the recovery of damages and is waiting for the case to go to trial.

If you are ever injured through the negligence of a hospital or doctor, do not hesitate to get legal help and advice immediately. It is of dire importance that you know the responsibility owed by the hospital as well as your rights as a patient. At the Law Offices of Moseley Collins we hate to see anyone go through so much pain and anguish. If you have been hurt and need help, we are always here to assist you. Please never hesitate to call.

Have a beautiful and safe day...
